Hugo Awards 2025 Predictions
Three YouTube channels released Hugo Awards predictions covering the 2024-2025 shortlists. Reviewers note nominees showcase "technological speculation and fresh voices from underrepresented communities." Climate fiction and AI ethics are emerging as dominant themes shaping the field.
The upcoming Hugo Awards ceremony is set to take place in Seattle on August 16, 2025, as part of the 83rd World Science Fiction Convention. This marks a return to the city for the first time since 2011. The event will be hosted by authors K. Tempest Bradford and Nisi Shawl. This year's awards follow recent controversies, including allegations of censorship at the 2023 awards in Chengdu, China, and previous "Sad Puppies" campaigns that attempted to influence the vote. The 2025 ceremony in Seattle is therefore seen by many as a crucial moment for the awards to reassert their credibility and commitment to diverse voices within the science fiction and fantasy community. The ballot for Best Novel includes Adrian Tchaikovsky, who is notably a finalist for two separate works, "Alien Clay" and "Service Model". Other nominees in this top category include Kaliane Bradley's "The Ministry of Time," John Wiswell's "Someone You Can Build a Nest In," T. Kingfisher's "A Sorceress Comes to Call," and Robert Jackson Bennett's "The Tainted Cup". The selection of finalists reflects a growing trend in the genre towards "hopepunk," which focuses on positive action in otherwise bleak settings, and "cli-fi," or climate fiction. These themes are increasingly prevalent as authors explore contemporary anxieties and potential futures. There is also a noticeable trend in the broader SFF field of fantasy novels gaining more prominence over traditional science fiction. The Hugo Awards are the most prestigious fan-voted awards in science fiction and have been presented annually since 1955. They are named after Hugo Gernsback, the founder of the pioneering science fiction magazine *Amazing Stories*. The winners are chosen by the members of the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon). This year's Worldcon in Seattle will feature a number of prominent guests of honor, including "The Murderbot Diaries" author Martha Wells, artist Donato Giancola, and rocket scientist Bridget Landry. The convention will also host a wide range of panels and events, covering topics from the influence of generative AI to the history of science fiction in the Pacific Northwest. In addition to the traditional categories, the 2025 Hugos will once again include an award for Best Game or Interactive Work, a category that was officially added in recent years. There will not, however, be any "Retro-Hugo" awards this year, as the World Science Fiction Society's constitution was amended to remove them. The full list of finalists for the 2025 Hugo Awards was determined by 1,338 valid nominating ballots cast by members of the 2024 and 2025 Worldcons. The winners will be announced at the ceremony in August, which will be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person.
