Radiohead's chill zone
Coachella's Radiohead Motion Picture House — tied to the Kid A Mnesia project — is doubling as an on‑festival decompression space where attendees sat or even lay down between sets. (pressenterprise.com)
At Coachella, Radiohead’s new Motion Picture House has become a place to stop moving: festivalgoers have been sitting and lying on its cushioned floor between sets. (ocregister.com) The installation opened April 10 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, inside a newly built underground bunker tied to *Kid A Mnesia*. Radiohead’s project is open to all Coachella ticket holders during both 2026 festival weekends. (variety.com) The bunker is 17,000 square feet with 38-foot ceilings, and the film runs 75 minutes. The space also includes galleries of full-scale artwork by Thom Yorke and Stanley Donwood from the *Kid A* and *Amnesiac* era. (rollingstone.com) What visitors do once they get inside is looser than a normal screening. The project’s own frequently asked questions say there is no reserved seating and guests may “stand or sit on the cushioned floor” on a first-come basis. (kida-mnesia.com) That setup helps explain why the room is working as a decompression stop at a festival built around constant movement between stages. The Orange County Register reported people sat quietly inside and some attendees stretched out on the floor as they took a break from the heat and crowds outside. (ocregister.com) The Coachella version also turns a project that first lived on screens into a physical room. Radiohead released the original *KID A MNESIA* exhibition in 2021 on personal computers, the Epic Games Store, and PlayStation 5 during the coronavirus pandemic period, after the band had intended it for an in-person setting. (variety.com) The sound design is part of the draw. Radiohead says the movie uses new mixes from the original *Kid A* and *Amnesiac* multitracks in spatial audio, while reporting on the launch described the Coachella bunker as built around a custom six-point surround system. (kida-mnesia.com; variety.com) Coachella already markets rest-oriented spaces elsewhere on the grounds, including a Camp Lounge with beanbags, air conditioning, and room for a “power nap.” Motion Picture House adds a darker, quieter version of that idea inside the main festival footprint. (coachella.com) After Coachella, Motion Picture House will keep traveling without the band performing live. The next stops are Brooklyn from May 6 to May 31, Chicago from July 30 to August 23, Mexico City from October 27 to November 15, and San Francisco from January 14 to February 7, 2027.
