OpenAI Forms AI Power Bloc
OpenAI just announced a historic $110 billion funding round, sending its valuation to $840 billion. The deal cements a new power bloc, with major investor Amazon making AWS the exclusive cloud partner for OpenAI's models, while Microsoft reaffirmed its own deep partnership.
This record-breaking $110 billion funding round more than doubles OpenAI's last major fundraising effort. The investment was led by a trio of tech giants: Amazon committed $50 billion, while Nvidia and SoftBank each invested $30 billion. The deal sets a new pre-money valuation for the AI leader at $730 billion. The partnership with Amazon goes beyond just capital. OpenAI will utilize 2 gigawatts of computing capacity powered by Amazon's proprietary Trainium AI chips. This move signals a significant commitment to AWS infrastructure to handle the immense computational demands of training and running its advanced AI models. Furthermore, Amazon Web Services will become the exclusive third-party cloud provider for OpenAI's enterprise platform, known as Frontier. This platform allows organizations to build and manage teams of AI agents for their business operations. Microsoft's long-standing partnership with OpenAI, which began with a $1 billion investment in 2019, remains a central part of OpenAI's strategy. This new funding round and deep integration with Amazon, however, marks a significant expansion of OpenAI's cloud strategy, diversifying its infrastructure beyond its initial exclusivity with Microsoft Azure.
