Spectrum Launches WiFi 7 Service with 5G Backup

Spectrum has launched 'Invincible WiFi,' a service for residential and business customers that integrates WiFi 7 with 5G cellular and battery backup. The system is designed to provide constant connectivity by seamlessly switching to the 5G network during a power outage or primary network disruption.

- The included external battery backup for the WiFi 7 router is designed to last up to eight hours, though actual performance will vary based on usage and the number of connected devices. The 5G cellular backup provides unlimited data, ensuring continuous connectivity for smart home devices, security systems, and work-from-home needs without data caps during an outage. - WiFi 7, or 802.11be, introduces Multi-Link Operation (MLO), a key feature that allows a single device to simultaneously connect, send, and receive data across multiple frequency bands (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz). This aggregation of bands results in higher throughput, significantly lower latency, and improved reliability, which is particularly beneficial for AR/VR, cloud gaming, and 8K streaming. - Compared to WiFi 6/6E, WiFi 7 offers wider 320 MHz channels (double the 160 MHz of its predecessor) and 4K QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation), which packs 20% more data into each transmission. This combination can lead to theoretical speeds up to 4.8 times faster than WiFi 6. - The Invincible WiFi router itself features tri-band support, can connect over 200 devices, and covers up to 2,000 square feet. For networking hardware specifics, it includes one 10GbE WAN port, one 2.5 GbE LAN port, and two 1 GbE LAN ports, and also supports IoT standards like Matter and Thread. - The service is included at no extra cost for customers on Spectrum's 2 Gig Internet plan. For other residential tiers, it can be added for a monthly fee; for example, Internet Gig customers can add it for $10/month, while other tiers can add it for $20/month. - While Spectrum is marketing this as a uniquely integrated solution, other providers like T-Mobile and Verizon also offer 5G home internet that can serve as a backup. However, these typically require separate hardware and may not integrate battery backup for the primary router in the same seamless way. - The system's failover process is automated; when a primary internet disruption is detected, it switches to the 5G network within seconds. Once the primary service is restored, it automatically switches back. This is designed to prevent interruptions to ongoing activities like video calls or file downloads. - Security features, marketed as Security Shield, are AI-enabled to detect and block online threats and remain active even when the system is operating on 5G backup power. The entire system, including network management and device security, is controlled through the My Spectrum App.
