Friends of Santa Cruz backcountry
Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks promotes naturalist-led backcountry trips—bring your own gear, limited spots via California State Parks site [https://x.com/i/status/2031050110365466867]. What skills do you need to bring your own gear?
Participants need to be able to hike several miles per hour with a pack and be prepared to hike up to 10 miles each day. You'll be responsible for carrying your own gear, including a backpack, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and food. Backpacks typically weigh 20-25 pounds for these trips. Essential skills involve knowing how to pack appropriately with layered clothing, rain gear, sun protection, and sufficient water. Participants should also have personal medications and a basic first aid kit. Navigation skills could be helpful, though the naturalist guides will likely lead the way. These naturalist-led trips provide drinking water (filtered/treated), hot water for meals, camp stoves, and first aid. The program is unique because it's led by California State Park staff who share the natural and cultural history of the Santa Cruz Mountains. They also offer insights into local flora and fauna.
