Jake Pates Makes US History

Jake Pates became the first American man to podium at a Snow League halfpipe event, securing a top-three finish in his league debut. The breakthrough came as Shaun White's Snow League wrapped up its American leg in the competition's inaugural season.

The Snow League was founded by three-time Olympic gold medalist Shaun White in June 2024 to create a unified global tour for snowboarding and freeskiing. The league's inaugural season features a total prize purse of over $1.5 million and includes stops in the United States, China, and Switzerland. Unlike traditional snowboarding contests, the Snow League finals use a head-to-head, bracket-style knockout format. In this setup, athletes compete directly against a single opponent in a best-of-three-run matchup to advance, adding a strategic layer to the competition. In the Aspen event, Pates secured his third-place finish after a semifinal loss to eventual winner Ryusei Yamada of Japan. Japan's Yuto Totsuka took second place in the men's halfpipe competition. Pates' podium finish marks a high point in a significant comeback story. A two-time Olympian, he finished eighth at the 2018 PyeongChang Games before suffering a severe concussion in 2019 that ultimately forced him to step away from the sport in 2021 to focus on his health. After a challenging recovery period, Pates returned to elite competition, making the U.S. team for the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics, where he again placed eighth. His performance in the Snow League comes just weeks after his second Olympic appearance. The Aspen competition was the third event in the Snow League's 2025-2026 debut season. The tour is scheduled to conclude its first year with a final stop in LAAX, Switzerland, from March 19-21, 2026, where the first-ever Snow League World Champions will be crowned.
