Xiaomi's Shiny EV Hypercar

Xiaomi's electric hypercar debut at MWC 2026 drew attention for its futuristic design and ultra-reflective finish. The Chinese tech giant's foray into the supercar segment signals growing competition and innovation in the EV performance space.

The design of the Xiaomi SU7 was spearheaded by a team led by Sawyer Li, a former designer for BMW. The vehicle is built on Xiaomi's self-developed "Modena" platform, which features a steel-aluminum hybrid body with a torsional rigidity of 51,000 Nm/degree. This platform accommodates both 400V and 800V electrical architectures. At the heart of the SU7's cabin is the HyperOS, an operating system designed to seamlessly integrate with Xiaomi's ecosystem of phones, smart home devices, and now, its vehicle. The system is powered by a Snapdragon 8295 processor and features a 16.1-inch central touchscreen, a 56-inch head-up display, and can even incorporate Xiaomi tablets as rear-seat screens. The lineup includes the standard SU7, the SU7 Pro, and the SU7 Max, but the "hypercar" designation belongs to the SU7 Ultra. This high-performance model boasts a three-motor setup that produces a combined output of over 1,526 horsepower and 1,770 Nm of torque. This power enables the SU7 Ultra to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 1.9 to 2.1 seconds, with a top speed of 350 km/h. In direct comparison, the SU7 Ultra's power surpasses the Tesla Model S Plaid's 1,020 hp and the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT's 1,033 hp. While the Model S Plaid is lighter, the SU7 Ultra has demonstrated its performance with a 9.3-second quarter-mile time, slightly ahead of the Tesla in some tests. Xiaomi's entry into the automotive market was officially announced in March 2021, with CEO Lei Jun pledging a $1.4 billion initial investment and the goal of becoming one of the world's top five automakers within 15-20 years. The company has already seen significant demand, with waiting lists for some models extending for months shortly after launch. The vehicle's development benchmarked the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S, with a clear intent to compete in the premium performance segment. The design team also includes consultant Chris Bangle, known for his influential work at BMW. While currently available in China, Xiaomi is preparing for a global expansion. The company has been conducting road tests in Europe and is targeting a European market entry by 2027, signaling its long-term ambitions in the international automotive landscape.
