Mediterranean Tourism Pivots to 'Regenerative Growth'

Tourism leaders in the Mediterranean are shifting strategy from mass tourism to "regenerative growth" to combat overtourism. The Mediterranean Blue Tourism Flagship Initiative now focuses on policy innovation and environmental stewardship. Spain, Italy, and Greece have joined forces on a strategy combining climate action and nature protection.

- The Mediterranean is the world's leading tourism region, and visitor numbers are projected to grow from 360 million annually to over 500 million by 2030. This influx puts a strain on resources, as the region is warming 20% faster than the global average. - Mass tourism has already led to significant environmental degradation; for example, three-quarters of the sand dunes on the coastline from Spain to Sicily have vanished, largely due to urbanization linked to tourism. - Water consumption is a critical issue; an average tourist in Spain can use up to 880 liters of water per day, compared to a local resident's 250 liters, intensifying water scarcity in many destinations. - In response to overtourism, some governments are implementing new fiscal policies. Greece, for instance, introduced a "Climate Resilience Tax" in 2024 that charges higher rates for accommodation during the peak season. - The shift to regenerative models includes specific local actions, such as the creation of an ecotourism cluster in Morocco's Al Hoceima National Park, where 22 local actors have signed a charter to guide sustainable development. - In Italy, the village of Pollica exemplifies the "Slow City" concept with an "Albergo Diffuso" (diffuse hotel) model, which integrates visitor accommodation into restored historic buildings throughout the village to preserve community life. - Corporate initiatives are also emerging, with hotelier Iberostar creating the first coastal observatory in a Mediterranean hotel to study and help restore endangered *Posidonia oceanica* seagrass meadows, which are vital for protecting beaches from erosion.
