Anthropic Codes Behind Paywall

- Anthropic moved its developer tool Claude Code behind a higher-priced tier, prompting developer pushback. - The feature was placed behind a $100-plus monthly tier, raising access and cost concerns for dev teams. - Early reports say some developers are already considering alternatives like OpenAI as pricing becomes a competitive variable (startupfortune.com).

Anthropic briefly signaled this week that Claude Code would no longer come with its $20-a-month Pro plan, putting the coding tool behind a Max tier that starts at $100 a month. (claude.com, arstechnica.com) Claude Code is Anthropic’s terminal-based coding assistant, and Anthropic’s pricing page now lists it in the feature grid alongside Free, Pro, and Max plans. The company’s current public pricing says Pro costs $20 a month, while Max starts at $100 and goes to $200 a month for higher usage limits. (support.claude.com, claude.com, claude.com) The change surfaced on April 21, when developers saw Claude Code marked unavailable for Pro on Anthropic’s pricing page and support language shift from “Pro or Max” to “Max plan.” Anthropic Head of Growth Amol Avasare later said the company was “running a small test” on about 2% of new prosumer signups and that existing Pro and Max subscribers were not affected. (wheresyoured.at, support.claude.com, thenewstack.io) Anthropic’s own explanation was about usage, not branding. Avasare said engagement per subscriber is up, weekly caps and peak-time limits have already tightened, and the company’s current plans were not built for long-running coding agents and other heavier workloads. (thenewstack.io, theregister.com) That is the pressure point for AI coding tools in 2026: a chat subscription is easy to sell, but coding agents can burn far more compute by reading files, editing code, and running for long sessions in the background. Anthropic’s pricing page says Max buyers get 5x or 20x more usage than Pro, which turns access to coding help into a capacity question as much as a feature question. (support.claude.com, claude.com, claude.com) The timing also lands in the middle of a sharper fight with OpenAI over developer tools. OpenAI expanded Codex’s agentic coding features on April 16, and reports this week said OpenAI executives were openly needling Anthropic as developers complained about Claude Code pricing and access. (siliconangle.com, aol.com) Anthropic’s public materials now show Claude Code on Pro again, including a support article titled “Using Claude Code with your Pro or Max plan.” But the episode left behind a clearer signal about where the company may be headed: more segmentation, more usage controls, and more scrutiny from developers who picked Claude partly because the coding tool was bundled into a cheaper plan.
