GLP‑1s reshape baskets
Uptake of GLP‑1 weight‑loss drugs is beginning to change what households buy, with users reportedly shifting toward healthier choices and prompting product experiments like protein‑infused dough in foodservice. FoodNavigator cites an Acosta Group finding on a “halo effect” among GLP‑1 users, while Pizza Today notes operators testing high‑protein offerings as roughly 12% of Americans report GLP‑1 use. GLP-1 drugs are starting to show up in grocery carts and restaurant menus, not just medicine cabinets. (acosta.group) Acosta Group said April 14 that in a February 13-25 survey of 2,117 U.S. adults, including 213 current GLP-1 users, shoppers on the drugs reported buying more fresh produce, yogurt, fresh chicken, protein shakes and protein bars. (acosta.group) The same users reported pulling back on sweets, salty snacks and sugary drinks, and 41% said they were pleased with the healthier changes they had made. Half said the shift had improved their household’s overall eating habits. (acosta.group) GLP-1 medicines mimic a hormone involved in appetite and blood sugar control, and doctors prescribe brands including Wegovy and Zepbound for weight loss and Ozempic and Mounjaro for diabetes. Pizza Today reported April 17 that patients on the drugs often eat about half as much as they did before starting treatment. (pizzatoday.com) That is pushing food companies to test products built around smaller appetites and higher protein. Acosta said the strongest category interest among GLP-1 users now centers on high-protein, high-fiber, hydration and gut-health products. (acosta.group) Restaurants are testing the same idea on menus. Pizza Today said some pizzerias are trying protein-infused dough, smaller portions and limited-time high-protein offers to see whether demand is real. (pizzatoday.com) Blaze Pizza, which Pizza Today said has about 245 fast-casual locations, launched a January promotion for a cauliflower-crust “Protein-zza” with double grilled chicken and 56 grams of protein. Its standard 11-inch Carnivore pizza has 60 grams of protein, according to the chain’s nutrition calculator cited by the magazine. (pizzatoday.com) The customer base is no longer niche. KFF said in a poll published November 14, 2025, that 12% of U.S. adults were currently taking a GLP-1 drug and 18% had taken one at some point. (kff.org) The shift is uneven, and cost still limits how far it can spread. KFF found 56% of users said the drugs were difficult to afford, and 14% of people who had used them said they stopped because of cost. (kff.org) For now, the clearest change is simple: as more Americans take GLP-1 drugs, food sellers are adjusting for customers who want less food, more protein and fewer snacks.
