Slay the Spire 2 Explodes
Slay the Spire 2 hit Steam Early Access with 97% positive reviews and is already surpassing the popularity of its acclaimed predecessor. The roguelike sequel is being hailed as a must-play for fans of the genre, building on the original's innovative deck-building mechanics.
Developer Mega Crit spent five years creating the sequel to their genre-defining roguelike. The original *Slay the Spire* is credited with popularizing the deck-building roguelike format when it left early access in 2019. For the sequel, the studio famously switched from the Unity engine to the open-source Godot engine following a controversial licensing change by Unity in 2023. The most significant new feature is a four-player cooperative mode, a first for the series, allowing teams to tackle the Spire together. This mode includes multiplayer-specific cards and synergies, letting players coordinate strategies, pass potions, and watch each other's battles in real time. *Slay the Spire 2* launched into Early Access with five playable characters. Three characters from the original—the Ironclad, the Silent, and the Defect—return with reworked abilities. They are joined by two new classes: the Necrobinder, who uses a skeletal companion, and the Regent, who can summon minions. The game's structure has been expanded with additions like Alternate Acts. Each act now has two distinct versions with unique environments, enemies, and bosses, significantly increasing run variety compared to the first game. Mega Crit has stated that the early access version of the sequel already contains more content than the full release of the original. The sequel's launch on March 5, 2026, was a massive success, achieving a peak of over 430,000 concurrent players on Steam. This figure dwarfed the launch day numbers for Bungie's extraction shooter *Marathon*, which was released at the same time and hit a peak of 88,337 concurrent players. Mega Crit plans for the game to remain in Early Access for one to two years to balance content and incorporate player feedback. The development team intends to add more content, including a true ending and additional game modes, before the full release. The price is also expected to increase after the early access period concludes.
