Abercrombie Announces New Trilogy
Joe Abercrombie's next trilogy, starting with "The Devils," will mark a new setting and tone for the author, with Gollancz and Tor securing UK and US rights. The project represents a departure from his previous First Law universe. Stephen Donaldson is also returning with a major new fantasy trilogy, building on his legacy as a "father of modern epic fantasy."
- Joe Abercrombie's new book, "The Devils," was released in May 2025 and is the first installment in a new grimdark fantasy trilogy. This new series is set in a magic-riddled Europe and follows a group of convicted monsters, including a vampire, an elf, and a werewolf, who are employed by the church to solve problems the righteous cannot. - Film director James Cameron's production company acquired the rights to "The Devils" in June 2025. Cameron and Abercrombie are slated to co-write the script after Cameron completes work on "Avatar: Fire and Ash". - Before this new trilogy, Abercrombie's primary work outside of the *First Law* universe was the Viking-influenced young adult fantasy series, the *Shattered Sea* trilogy. - Stephen Donaldson's "The Great God's War" trilogy is already complete. The first book, "Seventh Decimate," was released in 2017, followed by "The War Within" (2019) and "The Killing God" (2020). - The plot of "The Great God's War" centers on a prince from the kingdom of Belleger who must find a legendary library to save his people from a rival kingdom, Amika, which wields devastating magic. - Gollancz, the UK publisher for both authors, is the UK's oldest specialist science-fiction and fantasy publisher and has previously published authors such as George Orwell, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Terry Pratchett. - Tor Books, the US publisher, has won the Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Publisher for 36 consecutive years, from 1988 to 2024.
