Michelin widens U.S. map

Michelin added Detroit to its Guide and is extending recognition across six Great Lakes cities, signaling the guide’s broader U.S. expansion beyond traditional markets. Michelin is widening its United States footprint again, bringing Detroit into a new Great Lakes edition while Boston’s first guide year put affordable restaurants on the board. (guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com) Michelin announced the American Great Lakes edition on April 8, 2026, and said it will cover six cities: Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Pittsburgh. Michelin said its anonymous inspectors are already dining in those markets and that the inaugural selection will be revealed in 2027. (guide.michelin.com) Detroit’s addition means restaurants in the city and Southeast Michigan can now be considered for Michelin stars, Bib Gourmand awards, and general guide recommendations. Visit Detroit said the designation puts the region into Michelin’s selection process for the first time. (guide.michelin.com, clickondetroit.com) Boston offers the clearest recent example of how Michelin is expanding beyond its older United States strongholds. Michelin added Boston and Philadelphia to its Northeast Cities edition in 2025, after years of concentrating its American guides in places such as New York, Chicago, California, and Washington. (guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com) In Boston’s first Michelin selection, one restaurant won one star and six won Bib Gourmand, Michelin’s label for restaurants that deliver strong food at a more moderate price. Michelin’s official 2025 Boston list named Bar Volpe, Fox & The Knife, Mahaniyom, Moëca, Sumiao Hunan Kitchen, and Jiang Nan as Bib Gourmand picks. (guide.michelin.com) That pricing distinction matters because Michelin is not only a fine-dining scorecard. On its United States site, Michelin lists 429 Bib Gourmand restaurants, including Boston spots in Brookline and Cambridge as well as larger legacy markets. (guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com) The guide’s business model also helps explain where it goes next. In Boston, Meet Boston agreed to a three-year partnership to bring Michelin to the market, and WCVB reported that The Boston Globe put the deal at just over $1 million, while Meet Boston said it has no role in inspections. (wcvb.com) Michelin and tourism agencies frame these launches as travel plays as much as restaurant rankings. Michelin’s Great Lakes announcement quoted local destination groups in Cleveland and Detroit describing the guide as a way to attract visitors and raise restaurant sales, not just hand out stars. (guide.michelin.com) The next test is whether Michelin’s 2027 Great Lakes ceremony produces the same mix Boston got in 2025: a headline star, a cluster of Bib Gourmand winners, and a broader list of recommended restaurants. For Detroit, the change starts now, with inspectors already booking tables. (guide.michelin.com, guide.michelin.com)
