Prometheus Breaks Ground on Rocket Motor Plant
Prometheus Energetics, a joint venture between Kratos Defense and RAFAEL Advanced Defense Systems, has broken ground on a new manufacturing campus in Bloomfield, Indiana. The facility will produce solid rocket motors (SRMs) for the defense industry, representing a significant investment in domestic manufacturing capacity.
- The facility, located on a 550-acre campus near the Crane Army Ammunition Activity and Naval Surface Warfare Center, is part of the Department of Defense's Munitions Campus Program. Kratos and RAFAEL have jointly committed up to $175 million to the project. - This plant is a direct response to a critical shortfall in the U.S. defense industrial base, which in recent years has had only two primary manufacturers for solid rocket motors: Northrop Grumman and Aerojet Rocketdyne (now part of L3Harris). New entrants like Prometheus and Anduril are expanding domestic capacity. - The project represents a significant foreign-domestic partnership; RAFAEL will transfer its proven solid rocket motor technology to be produced in the United States, aiming for the facility to be operational in phases starting in 2027. - The new plant is an anchor for a broader effort by the American Center for Manufacturing & Innovation (ACMI) to create a defense manufacturing hub, leveraging public-private partnerships to rebuild U.S. production capabilities. The Munitions Campus Program received $75 million in government funding to support this initiative. - The choice of Indiana for this facility builds on the state's rapidly growing defense and aerospace sector. From 2001 to 2010, the value of defense contracts in Indiana grew at nearly twice the national rate, and the state now has a significant concentration of defense industry jobs. - The investment is part of a wider trend to onshore and expand munitions production, driven by surging global demand and concerns over supply chain vulnerabilities. The Department of Defense is making direct investments, such as a $1 billion commitment to L3Harris's missile solutions business, to address these industrial bottlenecks. - RAFAEL is a major Israeli government-owned defense contractor known for developing systems like the Iron Dome, David's Sling, and the TROPHY active protection system. This venture allows for U.S.-based production of components for both American and allied defense systems. - The facility will operate under U.S. law and oversight as a U.S.-based LLC, combining RAFAEL's technology with Kratos's rapid development and production model to address urgent national security needs.
