Perplexity Launches 'Computer' AI
Perplexity has launched "Computer," a new multi-model AI system designed to autonomously create and execute entire workflows. The platform integrates language, vision, and planning modules, allowing it to orchestrate complex tasks based on high-level user goals.
Perplexity's "Computer" is built on the idea that different AI models have unique strengths. Instead of relying on a single model, it orchestrates up to 19 specialized AIs to handle complex tasks, assigning each sub-task to the best model for the job. This includes using Opus 4.6 for core reasoning, Gemini for in-depth research, and others for image generation, video, and fast-response needs. Each task assigned to "Computer" runs in a secure, isolated cloud environment with its own filesystem and web browser access. This allows the system to perform actions like generating documents, analyzing data, and integrating with services such as Gmail and Slack without direct user supervision for every step. The workflows can run for extended periods, from hours to months. The system is the next step in the company's evolution from an "answer engine" to a platform that executes tasks. Perplexity was founded in August 2022 by Aravind Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho, and Andy Konwinski, who have backgrounds at places like OpenAI, Google Brain, and DeepMind. The San Francisco-based company has seen significant financial growth, with a reported valuation of $14 billion after a $500 million funding round in June 2025. Its investors include prominent names like Jeff Bezos, Nvidia, and Databricks. Perplexity is positioning "Computer" for professional and enterprise use, with access initially available to its paid "Max" subscribers.
