Sneaker Drops Embrace Eccentricity

Sneaker drops are embracing eccentricity over quiet luxury according to Highsnobiety's March Week 1 roundup featuring ASICS, adidas, and more. South African brand GALXBOY launched their first sneakers — GBX 012 Trainer and Runner — designed with UK's Andrew Turner, blending heritage and global style.

The trend toward eccentricity in sneaker design is a direct pivot from the minimalist "quiet luxury" that has recently dominated fashion. Brands are opting for bold, futuristic, and nostalgic designs to create standout pieces. For instance, the ASICS Hypersync, which retails for approximately $96, draws inspiration from the brand's archival wrestling and track footwear. Its design features a breathable air mesh upper with prominent metallic "Pure Silver" synthetic overlays, creating a high-shine, futuristic look. Adidas is tapping into this trend through a collaboration with Young Thug's SP5DER brand on the classic Superstar silhouette. Retailing for $150, the sneaker is reimagined with high-gloss patent leather uppers and intricate spiderweb graphics debossed on the side panels. The collection launched in two distinct phases: an initial release on the SP5DER website on February 27th, followed by a wider global release on March 3rd through the adidas CONFIRMED app and select retailers. South African brand GALXBOY's entry into the footwear market is deeply rooted in local culture, with the launch event for their first sneakers taking place in Pretoria, the city that inspired the collection's identity. The debut GXB 012 line aims to capture the city's youth culture and fearless self-expression. The sneakers are priced at R4 800. To ensure a global standard of quality and design, GALXBOY founder Thatiso Dube collaborated with UK-based footwear designer Andrew Turner, who has previous experience with sportswear giants Nike and Adidas. This partnership was a strategic move to blend South African heritage with international technical expertise. The collaboration resulted in two distinct models: the GBX 012 Trainer and the GBX 012 Runner. The GBX 012 Trainer is crafted from full-grain cow leather and features a seamless quarter panel for a clean, elevated look. The GBX 012 Runner also uses premium full-grain cow leather but incorporates breathable sandwich mesh panels and reflective accents for a more performance-inspired aesthetic. During development, the Runner's midsole was refined through wear-testing to reduce bulk while maintaining durability.
