Flores NFL Discrimination Case

A judge ordered Brian Flores's discrimination lawsuit against the NFL to go to trial, a case that could have significant implications for hiring practices and diversity initiatives across the league. The trial will examine allegations of discriminatory hiring practices in coaching and front office positions.

- The lawsuit was originally filed by Flores in February 2022 and has since been joined by two other Black coaches, Steve Wilks and Ray Horton. Wilks alleges he was hired as a "bridge coach" by the Arizona Cardinals without a real chance to succeed, while Horton claims the Tennessee Titans conducted a "sham" interview with him in 2016. - A key piece of evidence cited is a text message exchange with New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who allegedly congratulated Flores on getting the New York Giants head coaching job three days before his scheduled interview. Belichick had apparently intended to text Brian Daboll, who is white and was ultimately hired. - Flores alleges his interviews with the Denver Broncos in 2019 and the Giants in 2022 were "shams" conducted only to comply with the NFL's Rooney Rule, which requires teams to interview at least two external minority candidates for head coaching vacancies. - Beyond hiring practices, Flores also accused Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross of offering to pay him $100,000 for every loss during the 2019 season to improve the team's position in the 2020 NFL Draft. - The case will be heard in open court after a judge denied the NFL's request to move the dispute to its internal arbitration process. The judge called the NFL's "unilateral control" over its arbitration system a "fatal flaw," as it would have allowed NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to arbitrate the discrimination claims. - While filing the lawsuit, Flores was still actively seeking a head coaching position and interviewed with the Houston Texans after the suit was filed. He is currently the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings.
