Fremont Police Chief Bids Farewell
Fremont's outgoing Police Chief, Sean Washington, released a heartfelt video message directly addressing the community. The message marks a key transition in local law enforcement leadership for the city.
Sean Washington's departure marks the end of a 28-year career with the Fremont Police Department, which he first joined in 1997. He rose through the ranks, serving as a detective, SWAT team member, and instructor before being appointed as Fremont's first African American Police Chief on October 1, 2021. During his nearly four years as chief, Washington spearheaded several progressive initiatives. These included launching one of the nation's first Electric Patrol Vehicle Pilot Programs, a Drone as First Responder program, and establishing a Real-Time Information Center. He also expanded the Chief's Community Advisory Board and created a new Youth Advisory Board to foster better community relations. Washington announced his retirement on June 17, 2025, with an effective date of August 9, 2025, citing a careful consideration of both personal and professional factors. Following his official retirement, he agreed to stay on as Interim Police Chief to ensure a smooth transition while the city conducted a nationwide search for his replacement. The search for a new chief concluded with the appointment of Floyd Mitchell, former Chief of Police for Oakland. Mitchell, who has over three decades of law enforcement experience, officially took over the Fremont Police Department on Monday, March 2, 2026. City Manager Karena Shackelford led the nationwide recruitment process that resulted in his selection.
