project44 Launches AI Agent for Freight Procurement
Logistics visibility company project44 has launched an AI-powered Freight Procurement Agent to automate the sourcing and negotiation of freight contracts. The system aims to reduce freight spend and accelerate sourcing cycles by automatically issuing RFPs and optimizing for carriers and routes based on real-time market data. This move signals a push to productize logistics automation as a service.
The new procurement agent is an extension of project44's "Movement" platform, which functions as a decision intelligence system for supply chain management. This platform is built on what the company calls a "logistics data graph," connecting over 259,000 carriers and drawing data from 1.5 billion annual shipments. The system processes 700 million logistics events daily to inform its AI-driven insights and actions. This launch represents a strategic move from visibility to execution. While the company, founded by CEO Jett McCandless, established itself in real-time transportation visibility, this new agent pushes into autonomous action. The agent automates carrier selection, rate benchmarking, and negotiations, replacing static bid cycles with continuous, AI-driven sourcing based on live market conditions. Functionally, the AI agent operates within project44's Intelligent Transportation Management System (TMS). It can be configured with "guardrails," allowing it to autonomously negotiate contract renewals within approved limits or simply provide scenario analysis for human review. Early deployments have shown up to a 4.1% reduction in freight spend and a 75% faster sourcing cycle. The technology is part of a broader trend of embedding large language models (LLMs) and generative AI into supply chain management to automate complex processes like demand forecasting, risk management, and supplier communication. This move toward "multi-agent orchestration" uses different AI agents for specific tasks, such as ensuring data quality or predicting disruptions, to manage complex, multi-step workflows. Project44's growth has been fueled by significant funding and strategic acquisitions. The company has raised approximately $897.5 million and was valued at $2.7 billion in its November 2022 funding round. A key acquisition was the $255 million purchase of last-mile technology provider Convey in 2021, which extended its visibility capabilities to the end consumer. The competitive landscape for AI-powered logistics is robust, with major players like FourKites, Shippeo, and Descartes also offering extensive visibility and analytics platforms. These platforms are increasingly leveraging AI and machine learning for predictive ETAs, disruption analysis, and operational optimization. The common goal is to shift logistics management from a reactive to a proactive model.
