Aqara’s Matter hubs

A smart thermostat used to do one job: turn heat and air conditioning on and off. Aqara’s new W200 is trying to be the wall panel for your whole house, with a 4-inch touchscreen, a built-in hub, and support for Apple Home and Matter, the cross-brand smart-home standard. (androidauthority.com, aqara.com) Matter is the shared language that lets a lock from one brand, a bulb from another, and a speaker from a third show up in the same home app. Aqara says the W200 can act as a Matter controller, a Thread border router, and a bridge for older Zigbee devices, so one screen can pull together more than 50 device types. (aqara.com, aqara.com) Thread is the low-power mesh network many newer sensors use, like a neighborhood where each house relays the message to the next. Zigbee is an older smart-home radio system, so the W200’s real trick is speaking both languages while also passing devices into Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. Aqara says Apple’s Adaptive Temperature uses your iPhone or Apple Watch activity state like home, sleep, away, and extended away, while Apple’s Clean Energy Guidance can make small temperature changes when the local grid is cleaner and electricity may cost less in the contiguous United States. Reviewers at Trusted Reviews say the new Camera Hub G350 is both Aqara’s first Matter-certified camera and a full hub, with Matter control, Thread border router duties, and Zigbee support packed into one indoor pan-and-tilt device. (trustedreviews.com) As a camera, the G350 is unusually stacked for an indoor model: Trusted Reviews says it combines a 4K wide-angle lens with a 2.5K telephoto lens for up to 9x hybrid zoom, while TechRadar highlights its 360-degree pan and tilt for following people and pets across a room. Trusted Reviews says the G350 is “technically the first Matter-enabled camera,” but also says the Matter camera experience feels more like a preview than a finished feature right now.
