AI Agent Tackles Ocean Shipping Delays

Logistics tech firm project44 has launched an AI agent to autonomously resolve "rolled container" disruptions in ocean freight. The system automatically identifies when a shipment is delayed or offloaded, contacts carriers, and arranges new bookings to reduce operational delays and costs.

A rolled container is more than a simple delay; it triggers a cascade of manual effort. When a shipment is rolled, logistics managers must first be notified by the carrier, then manually investigate the cause—be it overbooking, customs issues, or documentation errors. This is followed by a scramble to find alternative sailings by checking multiple carrier websites and making numerous phone calls, a process that can take hours of an analyst's time. The new AI agent from project44 condenses this hours-long process into less than five minutes. It can identify the risk of a container being rolled up to 35 hours before the carrier officially provides an update. This early warning allows shippers to secure space on the next available vessel before capacity becomes scarce, avoiding expensive "panic premiums" for last-minute bookings which can be 200 to 300 percent higher. The direct costs of a rolled container quickly add up through demurrage and detention fees. These charges, which are penalties for using port space and equipment beyond the allotted free time, can range from $75 to $150 per container per day. These fees often increase the longer a container remains at the terminal. Beyond port fees, the business impact of a single rolled container can be substantial. A recent study found that each logistics failure can cost a company an average of $680,000 when factoring in production stops, lost sales, and the administrative burden of resolving the disruption. In disruptive years, companies can lose over a month of productive time just trying to stabilize their supply chains. This move by project44 is part of a larger trend of AI integration into the supply chain sector. The market for AI in logistics and supply chain is projected to grow significantly, as companies increasingly adopt AI for demand forecasting, risk management, and automation to build more resilient and efficient operations. The AI Ocean Exceptions Agent is a component of project44's larger Decision Intelligence Platform, called Movement. This platform aims to unify various aspects of the supply chain, from visibility and analytics to automated actions and workflows, with the goal of creating a more predictive and automated logistics ecosystem.
