Hippo joins Progressive
Hippo Insurance announced a partnership with Progressive to use Progressive’s distribution channels as part of its growth strategy, a move Hippo’s CEO described as collaborative and disruptive. The tie‑up is framed as a distribution play rather than an underwriting merger. (x.com)
Hippo has put its homeowners policies into Progressive’s sales network, giving the insurer access to Progressive shoppers in eight states. (prnewswire.com) Hippo said on March 19 that the relationship began earlier in 2026 through Progressive Advantage Agency, Progressive’s in-house agency. Hippo policies now appear in HomeQuote Explorer online and through Progressive agents in Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. (prnewswire.com) HomeQuote Explorer is Progressive’s comparison tool for homeowners coverage, which shows quotes from multiple insurers side by side. That makes this a distribution deal: Progressive is adding Hippo to a shopping platform, not combining the two companies’ underwriting operations. (progressive.com) Hippo said the pitch to shoppers includes potential multi-policy discounts, a common insurance tactic that rewards customers for buying more than one policy through the same channel. Progressive said its property-carrier network is built around coverage choice and a smoother quote-to-claim experience. (prnewswire.com) The timing follows a sharp turnaround at Hippo. In results released on February 25, the company said 2025 gross written premium rose 24% to $1.1 billion and net income swung to $58 million from a $41 million loss in 2024. (prnewswire.com) Hippo also said its full-year net loss ratio improved 17 percentage points to 60% in 2025, while its combined ratio improved 25 percentage points to 113%. Insurance Journal said the Progressive tie-up builds on Hippo’s effort to improve loss ratios through more disciplined, data-driven underwriting. (prnewswire.com; insurancejournal.com) Progressive’s agency network already distributes policies from outside carriers, and Carrier Management reported in 2024 that more than 20 carriers participated across personal and commercial lines. Hippo is joining a system Progressive uses to widen customer choice without putting every policy on its own balance sheet. (carriermanagement.com) Hippo Chief Executive Officer Rick McCathron said Progressive’s technology and customer reach fit Hippo’s approach to home insurance. The next test is whether more distribution in those eight states turns Hippo’s recent underwriting gains into durable growth. (prnewswire.com; prnewswire.com)
