World Book Night on Wednesday, April 23, 2026, doubled as a push for shorter, cheaper books and local library events across Britain. (thebookseller.com) The Booker Prize Foundation said it will publish *All Around the World: Stories by Booker Prize Writers*, a seven-story Quick Reads collection curated by Roddy Doyle. Vintage will publish, distribute and market it in early June 2026, with 10,000 copies to be gifted through libraries and community partners and copies also sold for £1. (thebookseller.com) The book includes stories by Anne Enright, Andrey Kurkov, Nadifa Mohamed, Yōko Ogawa, David Szalay, Yael van der Wouden and Doyle. The Booker Prize Foundation tied the release to The Reading Agency’s World Book Night on April 23. (thebookseller.com) Quick Reads are short books written in an accessible style for adults who are new to reading for pleasure or coming back to it after a gap. The Reading Agency said the programme entered its 20th year in 2026 and that its titles are checked for readability, concentration and suitability for readers rebuilding confidence. (readingagency.org.uk, readingagency.org.uk) The Reading Agency said 30,000 Quick Reads would be distributed free in 2026 through libraries, charities, trade unions and employers, with extra copies sold in supermarkets and other participating retailers for £1. In its 2025 adult reading report, the charity said 53% of United Kingdom adults described themselves as regular readers, down from 58% in 2015. (readingagency.org.uk) The same report said 46% of adults struggle to focus on reading because of distractions, rising to 55% among people aged 16 to 24. The charity also said nearly 33 million adults report the cost-of-living squeeze leaves them with less time and money for leisure. (readingagency.org.uk) Libraries used the day for in-person events as well as book distribution. Stourbridge Library scheduled an evening programme on April 23 with refreshments from 6.30 p.m., a reading hour from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., and an invitation for people to bring their own book. (expressandstar.com) Jodi Wray, a librarian in Stourbridge, said The Reading Agency estimates 8.5 million people in the United Kingdom struggle to read, or about one in six adults. Stephanie Rhoden of GLL, the not-for-profit operator of Dudley Libraries, said the group wanted to support the campaign through the local event. (expressandstar.com) In Bracknell, the local paper listed “Residents encouraged to take part in World Book Night at Bracknell Library” among its current entertainment stories on April 23, showing the campaign was also being carried by town-level library programming. (bracknellnews.co.uk) The campaign’s pitch was simple: make reading easier to start than doomscrolling. On World Book Night 2026, that meant £1 paperbacks, free library copies and one-hour community events built around picking up a book. (readingagency.org.uk, thebookseller.com),
