Indian Government to Launch AI Startup Platform

The Indian government plans to create a dedicated market platform for AI startups as part of its next mission phase, according to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The initiative aims to provide digital infrastructure to support and scale AI-focused ventures within the country.

- The initiative is part of the broader IndiaAI Mission, which was approved in March 2024 with a budget of ₹10,371.92 crore (approximately USD 1.25 billion) to be allocated over five years. The mission aims to foster a comprehensive AI ecosystem, supporting innovation, startups, and data access. - A significant portion of the IndiaAI Mission's budget is dedicated to providing subsidized access to high-performance computing infrastructure. An initial rollout of 10,000 GPUs is planned, with startups, researchers, and enterprises eligible for up to a 40% subsidy on compute services. - The government has already launched AIKosha, a national platform for AI datasets, which serves as a central repository with over 300 datasets and more than 80 AI models to support development. This platform is intended to help create diverse and unbiased AI solutions. - The number of AI startups in India has seen significant growth, with 363 new companies founded in 2024 alone, the highest in the last decade. Overall, India has approximately 1,779 AI companies, which have collectively raised $3.4 billion in funding. - This AI platform aligns with other government efforts to digitize the small business ecosystem, such as the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), which help small vendors access larger markets. - To foster global exposure, the IndiaAI Mission includes an acceleration program with Station F in Paris, offering ten Indian AI startups a four-month mentorship and access to European markets. - There is a strong focus on developing AI applications for Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities to address challenges in healthcare, agriculture, and governance. AI is already being used in these regions to improve disease detection, optimize hospital operations, and provide farmers with real-time data. - The rise of conversational commerce, with the Indian market projected to grow at a CAGR of 17.8% between 2025 and 2035, is a key trend influencing this initiative. Over 60% of large Indian enterprises plan to increase their spending on conversational platforms, which are increasingly used for transactions in sectors like e-commerce, fashion, and financial services.
