Unicorn Factory Lisboa Opens Engineers Hub

Unicorn Factory Lisboa has launched its new Engineers Hub, which will support 10 startups focused on engineering-based solutions. The hub will provide mentorship and resources to help the participating deep-tech companies grow.

The new Engineers Hub is a strategic partnership between the Unicorn Factory and the Order of Engineers (South Region), with corporate backing from engineering firm Quadrante and cement company CIMPOR. The 10 startups selected have already secured a combined €12 million in investment and are projected to create 200 jobs within six months. This hub is the latest addition to a network of specialized centers launched by Unicorn Factory Lisboa, which includes hubs for AI, Gaming, Web3, and Sustainability. This vertical-specific strategy is a core part of the broader Beato Innovation District, a major urban regeneration project initiated by the Lisbon City Council in 2016 to transform the neighborhood into a premier European tech hub. Unicorn Factory Lisboa itself was established in 2022 to build on the work of Startup Lisboa, which has been incubating early-stage companies since 2012. The Factory focuses on later-stage "scaleups" with the explicit goal of cultivating "unicorns"—startups valued over $1 billion—to bolster Portugal's economy. The initiative is a key part of Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas's strategy to convert the city's scientific and research strength into economic value. This approach has gained international recognition, with the European Commission naming Lisbon the European Capital of Innovation (iCapital) in 2023. This model aligns with broader European Union strategies like the Digital Europe Programme, which funds a pan-European network of European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs). These hubs are designed to support private companies and, crucially, public sector organizations in their digital transformation, providing a framework for GovTech innovation across the continent. The hub's physical space is a 300-square-meter facility located at the Order of Engineers' headquarters, featuring 45 coworking seats and a 192-seat auditorium for community events like hackathons and workshops. This co-location is intended to foster direct collaboration between emerging startups and the established engineering community to accelerate development.
