Yahuarcani sparks São Paulo moves

Peruvian artist Santiago Yahuarcani was described as 'a sensation' at the Venice Biennale and his work has been folded into expanded Latin American programming at MASP in São Paulo (riotimesonline.com). Coverage signals that Biennale buzz is accelerating his institutional visibility outside Venice (riotimesonline.com).

Museu de Arte de São Paulo opened the first Brazil solo show for Peruvian Indigenous artist Santiago Yahuarcani on April 3, extending the visibility he gained at the 2024 Venice Biennale. (masp.org.br) The exhibition, “Santiago Yahuarcani: O princípio do conhecimento,” runs through August 2, 2026, in the Pietro Maria Bardi building at the museum known as Masp. Masp says the show includes about 30 paintings, some of them new works, and is curated by Amanda Carneiro. (masp.org.br) Masp describes the show as a continuation of Yahuarcani’s international projection after the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024, where his work “chamou a atenção do público e da crítica,” or drew attention from the public and critics. The museum has also folded the exhibition into its wider program on histories and cultures of the Americas. (masp.org.br) Yahuarcani appeared in the Biennale’s central exhibition, “Foreigners Everywhere,” curated by Adriano Pedrosa and held from April 20 to November 24, 2024. La Biennale di Venezia identifies him as a self-taught painter and sculptor from the Aimeni clan of the Uitoto Nation in northern Amazonia. (labiennale.org, universes.art) His paintings draw on Uitoto myths, ancestral memory, medicinal plant knowledge and the sounds of the forest, according to the Biennale’s artist page. Toronto Biennial of Art says he works from family histories shaped by the forced displacement and enslavement of Indigenous people during the rubber boom. (labiennale.org, torontobiennial.org) That history is explicit in the São Paulo show. Masp says the exhibition links Uitoto cosmology to memories of violence from the rubber cycle in the Amazon and to the effects of extractivism on Indigenous communities in the present. (masp.org.br) The São Paulo exhibition is not an isolated booking. The Whitworth in Manchester describes “The Beginning of Knowledge” as Yahuarcani’s first international solo exhibition and says the project tours to Masp from April through August 2026. (whitworth.manchester.ac.uk) Peru’s foreign ministry had already flagged his Biennale placement as part of a broader national presence in Venice. In a May 2024 statement, the ministry said Santiago and Rember Yahuarcani and Violeta Quispe were invited to present work in the central exhibition. (gob.pe) Art in America later called Yahuarcani one of the stars of the 2024 Biennale, giving critical language to the attention museums are now institutionalizing. In São Paulo, that attention has become a dated, ticketed museum show with a four-month run and a place inside one of Latin America’s biggest art institutions. (artnews.com, masp.org.br)
