dbt Pushes Upgrade to New 'Fusion Engine'

dbt Labs is strongly recommending teams upgrade to dbt Core v2.0, dubbed the "Fusion Engine." The new version offers major improvements in parser performance and dependency tracking, and is designed for compatibility with emerging AI copilots and agentic orchestration systems.

The Fusion Engine represents a ground-up rewrite of dbt's core internals, replacing the original 2016 Python-based architecture. The legacy engine had become a performance bottleneck, especially for larger projects, and it lacked a deep understanding of SQL semantics, treating code as text to be templated rather than comprehended. This architectural shift was made possible by dbt Labs' acquisition of SDF Labs in January 2025. At its core, the new engine is built in Rust, a language known for performance and memory safety. This change delivers a significant speed boost, with dbt Labs reporting that Fusion can parse dbt projects up to 30 times faster than its predecessor. For developers, this translates to a much tighter feedback loop, reducing CI run times from minutes to seconds. Beyond raw speed, the engine introduces true multi-dialect SQL comprehension. This allows for more intelligent developer tooling, such as real-time error detection and more accurate model validations before any queries are run against the data warehouse. The updated Visual Studio Code extension leverages this for features like live syntax feedback and intelligent autocomplete. This deeper understanding of SQL structure is also critical for the next generation of AI-powered development tools. Fusion exposes rich metadata, including detailed column-level lineage and type signatures, which provides essential context for AI agents. This allows AI copilots to more accurately analyze impact and generate higher-quality code suggestions. The development of this engine is backed by significant capital investment. dbt Labs has raised a total of $414.4 million, including a $222 million Series D round in February 2022 that valued the company at $4.2 billion. Key investors include Altimeter, Andreessen Horowitz, and Sequoia Capital. Notably, the Series D funding round also included strategic investments from major players in the modern data stack: Databricks, Salesforce Ventures, and Snowflake. This backing from key partners signals dbt's central role and deep integration within the broader cloud data ecosystem.
