Perplexity Unveils AI 'Computer'
AI search firm Perplexity has unveiled what it calls an AI "computer" designed for end-to-end project management. The platform aims to handle everything from initial research and design to coding and financial modeling, all within a single interface.
The new platform operates on a multi-model orchestration framework, meaning it utilizes a network of specialized AI models rather than a single one. Tasks are broken down and assigned to the most suitable model, whether for research, coding, or data processing. CEO Aravind Srinivas has emphasized that this approach allows the "computer" to tackle sustained projects from start to finish. This launch marks a strategic shift for Perplexity, moving it beyond its reputation as an AI-powered answer engine with cited sources and into the growing market for autonomous AI agents. The company, founded in 2022 by Aravind Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho, and Andy Konwinski, is positioning the "computer" to compete with offerings from other major AI players. Financially, Perplexity has seen rapid growth, with its valuation reaching approximately $9 billion by December 2024. The company has raised a total of $1.22 billion over 10 funding rounds from investors including IVP, New Enterprise Associates, and SoftBank Vision Fund. Notable individual backers include Jeff Bezos and Nvidia. Initially, the AI "computer" is available exclusively to subscribers of Perplexity's premium "Max" tier. The company has indicated that access will later be extended to its "Pro" users. This tiered rollout suggests a strategy of targeting professional users who can leverage the platform for complex, multi-step work.
