JWST Cleans Biosignature Data

JWST is cleaning noisy data for biosignatures including water, CO2, and methane in TRAPPIST-1 systems, with the ARIEL mission planned to survey thousands of exoplanets. Top habitability candidates include Kepler-452b, TRAPPIST-1e, and Proxima Centauri b.

- The primary challenge in analyzing JWST data is "cleaning" out stellar contamination; flares and spots from a host star can mimic or hide the atmospheric signals of an exoplanet, making it difficult to distinguish between a planet with a nitrogen-rich atmosphere and one that is just bare rock. - The European Space Agency's ARIEL mission, planned for a 2031 launch, will be dedicated specifically to this type of work, aiming to measure the chemical composition and thermal structures of about 1,000 exoplanet atmospheres. - For a planet like TRAPPIST-1e, simulations show it could take observing between 10 and 30 transits with JWST's Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) to confidently detect a potential biosignature combination like methane and carbon dioxide, depending on the presence of high-altitude clouds or haze. - Kepler-452b orbits a star 1.5 billion years older than our sun, and as a result, the planet receives 10% more energy than Earth does today; this raises the possibility that it could be in a runaway greenhouse state, similar to Venus. - With a radius 60% larger than Earth's, Kepler-452b is considered a "super-Earth," but its mass is unknown; statistical analysis suggests it may be a gaseous mini-Neptune rather than a rocky planet. - Proxima Centauri b orbits a red dwarf star known for powerful stellar flares, which emit high-energy radiation that could strip away the planet's atmosphere over time, posing a significant challenge to its potential habitability. - Because it is likely tidally locked, climate models for Proxima Centauri b show that if it has an atmosphere and water, all the water may be frozen on its permanent night side, or it could have a stable area of liquid water on its star-facing dayside.
