ETHZilla Tokenizes Aviation Assets

ETHZilla Corporation announced the first tradable tokenized aviation assets on the Ethereum network. The tokens are secured by jet engines currently on lease with a major U.S. air carrier, marking a new application of tokenized finance for cash-flow-generating real-world assets.

- The token, named Eurus Aero Token I, represents the monthly cash flows from two commercial jet engines. These leases run until 2027 and 2028 and include a $3 million put/call option for ETHZilla to sell the engines to a jet engine services provider. - ETHZilla, a NASDAQ-listed company backed by Peter Thiel's Founders Fund, has been shifting its strategy from holding Ethereum to tokenizing real-world assets (RWA). This aviation token follows a previous initiative where the company tokenized a portfolio of 95 home loans. - The company, through its subsidiary ETHZilla Aerospace LLC, purchased the two jet engines for $12.2 million in cash. The token holders will receive distributions from the lease payments via an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum network. - The tokenization of physical assets aims to increase liquidity in traditionally illiquid markets, such as aviation parts. This process allows for fractional ownership, potentially lowering barriers to entry for investors who could not previously access this asset class. - Projections for the tokenized real-world asset market vary, with some analysts forecasting a market size of between $4 trillion and $16 trillion by 2030. A report from Ripple and Boston Consulting Group projects the market could reach $18.9 trillion by 2033, up from an estimated $600 billion in 2025. - From a regulatory standpoint, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has stated that tokenizing a security does not change its legal status. These digital assets must adhere to the same federal securities laws as their non-tokenized counterparts.
