SurrealDB Raises $23M for AI-Native Database
Database company SurrealDB has raised $23 million to expand its AI-native, multi-model database. The funding reflects a growing demand for data infrastructure designed to support real-time, scalable, AI-driven applications. The platform is built to handle the complex data requirements of modern software.
- This latest $23 million is a Series A extension, bringing the total Series A round to $38 million and the company's total funding to date to $44 million. New investors Chalfen Ventures and Begin Capital joined existing investors FirstMark and Georgian. - The company was founded by brothers Tobie Morgan Hitchcock (CEO) and Jaime Morgan Hitchcock (COO). Tobie, a software engineer with 17 years of experience, built the initial version of the database himself out of a need to simplify a complex stack of multiple databases they were using for their own business. - Built entirely in Rust, SurrealDB is a multi-model database designed to unify document, graph, relational, time-series, vector, and key-value data models into a single engine. It can be run embedded in an application, including in a browser via WebAssembly, or as a distributed cloud database. - The funding coincides with the general availability of SurrealDB 3.0, which introduces features specifically for AI agent memory and context management. This allows AI models to maintain consistent information and manage data relationships as they scale, directly within the database. - As an open-source project, SurrealDB has gained significant traction within the developer community, accumulating over 31,000 stars on GitHub. The core database is released under the Business Source License 1.1, while its SDKs and some core components use more permissive licenses like Apache 2.0. - Before this funding, SurrealDB had raised a $20 million Series A in June 2024 and a $6 million seed round in November 2022. The company's rapid growth and feature development, including the release of version 1.0 in September 2023, have been noted in developer communities like Hacker News. - SurrealDB aims to reduce complexity and the need for multiple databases by providing a single, unified query language called SurrealQL. It also includes features like live queries for real-time data updates and the ability to embed machine learning models directly within the database.
