NBA MVP Race Sees Dramatic Shifts

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander moved from slight plus to -250 odds after returning from injury, while Nikola Jokić trails at +425 and Cade Cunningham sits at 7.8-to-1. Cooper Flagg's Rookie of the Year odds tightened dramatically from -800 to around -200 after Con Canepa's surge for the Hornets.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was cleared for the Thunder's crucial matchup against the Denver Nuggets after a nine-game absence due to an abdominal strain. The team managed a 5-4 record while he was sidelined, leaning on its depth to stay atop the Western Conference. The MVP race has been complicated by the league's 65-game minimum rule for award eligibility. Both Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokić have missed significant time, creating a scenario where participation could become as important as on-court production in the final voting. Cade Cunningham, having missed only six games, is seen as the safest bet among the top candidates to remain eligible. Cunningham has strengthened his MVP case with stellar performances, including a recent 29-point, 13-assist, 5-rebound effort in a 124-116 victory over a short-handed Thunder team. This came shortly after he dropped 42 points and 13 assists against the New York Knicks, leading the Pistons to the top of the Eastern Conference standings. In the Rookie of the Year race, Cooper Flagg's odds have drifted partly due to a foot sprain that has kept him out since before the All-Star break. Before the injury, the Mavericks rookie was averaging 20.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. Charlotte Hornets rookie Kon Knueppel has capitalized on Flagg's absence with a historic shooting display. On February 26th, he broke the all-time NBA rookie record for three-pointers in a season, surpassing Keegan Murray's mark of 206. Knueppel achieved the record in just 59 games. Knueppel's surge includes multiple high-scoring outings, such as a 33-point performance against the Cavaliers where he hit seven three-pointers, and a 28-point game against the Pacers on 8-of-12 shooting from deep. His sharpshooting has been a key factor in the Hornets' push for a spot in the play-in tournament.
