LA County Firefighter Dies in Explosion

A Los Angeles County firefighter has died following an explosion. The incident is currently under investigation and further details have not yet been released. The circumstances surrounding the fatal event are being examined by authorities.

The fallen firefighter has been identified as Andrew Pontious, a 19-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Pontious, 52, was a husband and father who was affectionately known as "Uncle" by his colleagues at Fire Station 93 in Palmdale. The fatal incident occurred at a rock quarry in Littlerock, near Palmdale, on the afternoon of Friday, June 14, 2024. Fire crews were responding to a report of a burning large front-loader vehicle at the quarry located in the 6500 block of East Avenue. While firefighters were attempting to extinguish the blaze, a tire on the massive construction vehicle exploded. The blast killed Pontious instantly and injured a second firefighter who was later taken to the hospital. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau Arson and Explosives detail is now leading the investigation into the cause of the fire and the subsequent explosion. In the wake of the tragedy, L.A. County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone acknowledged the previously little-known danger, stating, "I never was taught that there was a shock wave that comes out of a tire explosion." The department has since ordered firefighters to maintain a safe distance from burning heavy-equipment vehicles. Governor Gavin Newsom ordered flags at the state capitol to be flown at half-staff in honor of Pontious. Numerous fire departments and officials have expressed their condolences, remembering Pontious as a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice.
