Climber Rescued After 7-Hour Red Rock Operation

Rescue crews undertook a challenging seven-hour operation to save an injured climber from Red Rock Canyon's Dark Shadows Wall area. The climber sustained significant injuries after a fall but was successfully extracted thanks to coordinated search and rescue efforts. A separate incident also occurred on the Dream Safari route, underscoring the risks of outdoor climbing in rugged terrain.

The dramatic rescue at Red Rock Canyon on Saturday, March 2, 2026, involved a climber who took a significant 40 to 50-foot fall. The incident occurred on the "Dream Safari" route located on the Dark Shadows Wall in the Pine Creek area. The climber sustained severe head and back injuries, highlighting the inherent dangers of the sport. Crucially, the injured climber's partner and a guide from a separate climbing party were able to reach them quickly to control bleeding while awaiting the arrival of search and rescue. The climber was located at the top of the route's first pitch, approximately 600 feet above the ground, necessitating a highly technical rescue. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Search and Rescue team spearheaded the complex operation. A helicopter, AIR3, inserted four SAR officers and a lead climb volunteer several hundred feet above the injured party. From that position, the rescue personnel rappelled down to the climber to provide immediate medical aid. They secured the individual in a titanium litter and then executed a methodical, several-hundred-foot lowering operation using three separate anchor stations to safely bring the climber to the ground. Although the climber's helmet was destroyed in the fall, authorities stated it likely saved their life. Following the extraction, the climber was transported to a local hospital and is reportedly recovering in good spirits. This incident was one of many that occur annually in Red Rock Canyon, a world-renowned climbing destination that attracts both elite climbers and novices. Between 2021 and 2023, the LVMPD Search and Rescue Unit conducted 123 rescue missions involving 181 people in the conservation area.
