ONDC Expands Reach to Fair Price Shops
The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has onboarded its first eleven Fair Price Shops, signaling a government push to integrate grassroots and subsidized retail into the digital ecosystem. The initiative is seen as a growth catalyst for MSMEs, enabling pan-India reach without the high commissions of traditional platforms. The move aligns with a broader strategy to use digital public infrastructure to strengthen India's economic diplomacy.
- The initial pilot program was launched with eleven Fair Price Shops (FPS) across two districts in Himachal Pradesh: five in Una and six in Hamirpur. This marks the first instance of FPSs being integrated into a digital e-commerce network. - This initiative is a collaboration between the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD), MicroSave Consulting, which provides support to the shops, and nStore as the technology partner. - Fair Price Shops are a cornerstone of India's Public Distribution System (PDS), a government initiative to distribute essential food grains like rice and wheat at subsidized rates to the nation's poor. As of 2011, there were over half a million such shops across India. - The integration allows these shops to sell goods beyond the subsidized items to a wider customer base, thereby increasing their income. Beneficiaries who struggle with online purchasing can also ask their local FPS dealer to place orders on their behalf. - The broader vision for ONDC is to democratize e-commerce, shifting from a platform-centric model dominated by large players to an open network. This aims to reduce entry barriers and high commission rates for small and medium businesses. - ONDC is targeting significant growth, aiming for 30-40 million monthly transactions by March 2025, a substantial increase from the 10 million recorded in June 2024. - To further support seller onboarding, ONDC has launched initiatives like a WhatsApp Bot named "ONDC Sahayak" in five languages and an "ONDC Academy" to provide educational resources. - Major technology companies are partnering with ONDC to facilitate this expansion. Google Cloud has launched an open-source solution to simplify onboarding, while Meta is supporting 500,000 small businesses with digital skills training.
