ARX Robotics Raises €31M for Autonomous Systems
European defense startup ARX Robotics has raised €31 million to scale its autonomous defense systems. The funding round highlights a trend of growing investment in European "war unicorns" as geopolitical tensions drive demand for new military technologies.
- The €31 million Series A funding round was led by HV Capital and included participation from Omnes Capital, with significant contributions from existing investors like the NATO Innovation Fund and Project A. This brings ARX's total funding to over €40 million, following a €9 million seed round in 2024. - ARX Robotics develops the Gereon series of modular unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) and an AI-driven operating system, Mithra OS, designed to retrofit and modernize existing military vehicles. The company estimates Mithra OS could be used to upgrade more than 50,000 NATO vehicles, integrating legacy systems into an autonomous and interconnected fleet. - Founded in 2021 by former German Bundeswehr officers Marc Wietfeld, Stefan Roebel, and Henrich Maximilian Wied, the company originated from a research project at the German Armed Forces University in Munich. - The company already supplies its systems to six European armed forces and has a significant presence in Ukraine, where it operates the largest fleet of Western-developed UGVs. ARX was also contracted by the European Defence Agency (EDA) for the first EU-wide defense innovation initiative. - The funding is intended to scale production of its autonomous systems by a factor of five in 2025 and expand its European footprint, including a new UK facility. ARX emphasizes maintaining a fully European supply chain to bolster the continent's strategic autonomy and technological sovereignty. - The investment in ARX is part of a larger trend that has seen venture capital funding for European defense tech startups increase more than 500% between 2021 and 2024. Policy initiatives like the €1 billion NATO Innovation Fund (NIF), an ARX investor, are actively bridging the gap between innovative startups and defense ministries.
