Roblox Launches Global Parent Council

Roblox has launched its inaugural Global Parent Council and a Parent Champions Program. The move is a direct response to ongoing parental concerns about in-game safety, privacy, and the effectiveness of its controls. The initiative aims to address a split in perception among parents, some of whom feel the platform's safety features are insufficient.

- The inaugural council consists of 80 parents from 32 countries with backgrounds in psychology, education, and law enforcement who will meet quarterly to advise on platform policies and features. Due to a high number of applicants, a second "Parent Champions" program was also created to promote a positive online experience. - This initiative is led by Dr. Elizabeth Milovidov, Roblox's Global Head of Parental Advocacy, and mirrors the company's existing Teen Council, aiming to give families a direct voice in platform development. - The council was formed amid significant legal pressure, including ongoing lawsuits and investigations from at least six state attorneys general concerning child safety and exploitation on the platform. - This move follows a series of recent safety updates, including restricting direct messages for users under 13, introducing remote parental controls, and requiring facial age estimation or ID verification to access chat features. - Major kids' media companies like Banijay Kids & Family are now launching IP on Roblox to test concepts and build audiences digitally before committing to full production, acknowledging that they must engage on platforms where their audience spends time. - While major studios and streamers have cut back on commissioning new kids' content, they are aggressively acquiring existing IP. This trend elevates the importance of platforms like Roblox for validating an IP's audience appeal ahead of a potential studio acquisition. - Animation studios are increasingly using generative AI for character design, storyboarding, and creating animatics, allowing smaller teams to compete on production efficiency. The market for generative AI in animation is projected to grow from US$900 million in 2022 to US$17 billion by 2032. - About 40% of Roblox's over 77.7 million daily active users are under the age of 13. The platform's economy is substantial, with users spending $1.9 billion on the virtual currency "Robux" in 2020.
