Detroit Gets Sunda Restaurant
Downtown Detroit welcomes Sunda, a new Southeast Asian restaurant described as a "wonderland" of bold flavors and stylish design. The restaurant promises to be a destination for adventurous diners seeking authentic Southeast Asian cuisine.
Sunda's arrival in Detroit marks the fifth location for the acclaimed restaurant, which first opened in Chicago in 2009. The concept from restaurateur Billy Dec, an Emmy award-winning TV personality, also has locations in Nashville and Tampa. Dec has expressed that years of support from Michigan guests at his Chicago restaurants prompted the expansion to Detroit. The restaurant is located at 33 W. Columbia Street in The District Detroit, a pedestrian-friendly area situated between the Fox Theatre and Little Caesars World Headquarters. This positions Sunda among other establishments like Frita Batidos and Mom's Spaghetti in a growing entertainment hub. The official opening is slated for March 10. The 6,000-square-foot space seats over 200 guests and includes a 1,400-square-foot patio. The interior design, a collaboration between Studio K, McIntosh Poris Associates, and Sachse Construction, blends Tokyo street style with Southeast Asian craftsmanship. A notable feature is a resin flower art installation over the island bar, inspired by both Japanese Cherry Blossoms and Michigan Apple Blossoms. The menu, a creation of Culinary Director Mike Morales and Head Sushi Chef Ise Matsunobu, will feature signature dishes from other Sunda locations. Diners can expect items such as Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice, Oxtail Potstickers, and Miso Glazed Sea Bass, alongside a wide selection of sushi, dim sum, and noodle dishes. The bar will offer craft cocktails, premium sakes, Asian beers, and Japanese whiskies.
