LEGO Robotics Kits Arrive at SJC Schools
Following a recent STEM festival, the St. Johns County School District received a donation of 10 LEGO SPIKE robotics kits. The kits will be used to give elementary students hands-on experience with engineering and programming.
The LEGO SPIKE Essential kits are designed for elementary school students in grades K-5, providing a hands-on introduction to STEAM concepts. Each kit contains over 400 LEGO elements, including a programmable smart hub, motors, and sensors, allowing students to build and code interactive models. The curriculum is aligned with national standards and focuses on problem-solving and storytelling in everyday themes. The donation to St. Johns County School District is part of a larger push for STEM education in the area, which includes participation in events like the FIRST LEGO League. These competitions challenge students to design, build, and program robots to complete missions, fostering teamwork and innovation. Florida Power & Light (FPL) is a significant supporter of STEM education in the district through its "EmPOWERing STEM Educators" initiative and a $50,000 "STEM Classroom Makeover Grant." R.J. Murray Middle School in St. Augustine was a recent recipient of this grant to enhance its STEM and LEGO Robotics program. The LEGO SPIKE kits utilize a drag-and-drop coding language based on Scratch, making it accessible for young learners to grasp fundamental programming concepts. This visual approach helps demystify coding and allows students to see the immediate results of their work, bridging the gap between the digital and physical worlds.
