Tesla Models Top EV Satisfaction Study

The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y have again topped J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience Ownership Study. Both models achieved record-high satisfaction scores, outperforming competitors in the premium and mass-market segments. The results are attributed to continuous iteration and responsiveness to customer feedback, particularly regarding charging and software updates.

- The Tesla Model 3 achieved the highest score overall with 804 out of a possible 1,000 points, while the Model Y ranked second with a score of 797. - In the premium category, the BMW i4 followed the Teslas with a score of 795. The Ford Mustang Mach-E ranked highest in the mass-market segment for the fourth consecutive year, scoring 760. - Overall owner satisfaction for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) reached its highest level since the study's inception in 2021. The average satisfaction for premium BEVs climbed to 786 from 756 the previous year. - The most significant year-over-year improvement was in satisfaction with public charging availability. The score for premium BEV owners jumped 101 points to 652, largely attributed to the expansion of public networks and broader access to Tesla's Supercharger network. - Despite the discontinuation of federal tax credits in September 2025, 96% of new BEV owners reported they would consider another EV for their next purchase. - The study noted significant quality improvements in the premium EV segment, with owners reporting fewer problems related to squeaks, rattles, and driver assistance systems. The segment saw a reduction to 75.0 problems per 100 vehicles, an improvement of 15.9 from the prior year. - The study, now in its sixth year, measures satisfaction by evaluating 10 distinct factors within the first year of ownership, including cost of ownership, battery range, and service experience. - Battery-electric vehicles significantly outperform plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) in owner satisfaction, particularly in cost of ownership, where premium BEVs scored 114 points higher than their PHEV counterparts.
