Marathon nerfs the Knife & Shield

Bungie’s new Marathon patch 1.0.5.3, released April 7, made targeted balance changes that nerfed the Knife and the Bubble Shield — adjustments meant to cool dominant close-quarters and defensive playstyles. (shacknews.com) (gamerant.com).

The fastest way to win a close fight in Marathon had turned into two shortcuts: rush with a knife or hide inside a Bubble Shield. On April 7, Bungie cut both at once in patch 1.0.5.3. (bungie.net) (shacknews.com) The knife change was not just “less damage.” Bungie reduced maximum lunge distance by about 10% and narrowed the targeting angle by about 20%, so the game now gives you less reach and less aim assistance when you swing. (bungie.net) Bungie also changed the stat behind knife builds. The Melee Damage stat used to double your bonus damage against enemy runners at the top end, and now that ceiling is 50% instead of 100%, while damage against non-runner targets stays the same. (bungie.net) (gamerant.com) That tells you what Bungie thought the problem was. In its developer note, the studio said quick melee kill breakpoints were showing up too early in progression, so players were reaching peak knife lethality without needing much build investment. (bungie.net) The Bubble Shield got hit in a different way. Bungie moved it from Deluxe blue rarity to Superior purple rarity and cut its health by 33%, which means you should see it less often and break it faster when it does appear. (bungie.net) (gamerant.com) But Bungie did not simply make the shield weaker against everything. The patch removed its old vulnerability to Volt Weapon damage and increased its resistance to UESC damage by 17%, so the shield is less of an all-purpose bunker but more controlled in how specific damage types interact with it. (bungie.net) That is the pattern across the patch. Bungie is not deleting close-quarters or defensive playstyles; it is making both require more commitment, more timing, and rarer gear instead of letting them dominate by default. (bungie.net) (shacknews.com) The rest of 1.0.5.3 shows the same cleanup mindset. Bungie fixed a Grapple-related slide-cancel exploit on the Thief, repaired cases where the Vault and Armory appeared empty, removed the “in a single run” condition from the Traxus Return On Investment 4/5 contract, and fixed a Cryo Archive extraction countdown bug. (bungie.net) This is also landing just before a larger checkpoint for the game. Game Rant reported Bungie has a mid-season update planned for April 14, so this week’s patch looks like a fast balance correction before a bigger round of changes. (gamerant.com) If you log in after April 7, the practical difference is simple: knife kills should be less magnetic, Bubble Shields should be less common, and fights should spend a little more time on guns instead of instant lunges and portable domes.
