Tech Giants Form AI-RAN Open Source Alliance
A new consortium, the OCUDU Ecosystem Foundation, has been launched under the Linux Foundation to accelerate open-source AI-RAN innovation. Founding members include Ericsson, AMD, AT&T, Nokia, NVIDIA, and Verizon, who will collaborate on developing a foundational code base for 5G and early 6G networks.
The AI-RAN Alliance was officially launched at Mobile World Congress in February 2024 by a coalition of tech and telecom leaders including NVIDIA, Arm, Samsung, Ericsson, Nokia, Microsoft, and T-Mobile. The group's primary mission is to counter rising operational expenditures (OPEX) and capital expenditures (CAPEX) in mobile networks by integrating artificial intelligence directly into the Radio Access Network (RAN). This initiative is structured around three core working groups: "AI-for-RAN" focuses on improving network efficiency and performance, "AI-and-RAN" aims to converge network and AI workloads on the same hardware, and "AI-on-RAN" is tasked with creating new commercial opportunities and revenue streams from AI services deployed at the network edge. Significant capital is already being committed, exemplified by NVIDIA's $1 billion investment in Nokia to accelerate the development of AI-RAN and establish a path from 5G to AI-native 6G networks. The collaboration aims to leverage underutilized RAN assets to host new edge AI services, maximizing return on investment for telecom providers. The formation of this alliance highlights a critical debate within the telecom industry, pitting the AI-RAN concept against the Open RAN movement.
