Women in Comedy Showcase Hits NYC
The Knockouts Comedy Festival is presenting a "Knockouts Creators" showcase tonight in NYC. The event, held at The Stand Comedy Club, is dedicated to featuring women in comedy.
The Knockouts Comedy Festival is a week-long event coinciding with Women's History Month, created to elevate female and non-binary voices in an industry where men still dominate late-night television, podcasts, and comedy stages. The festival aims to dismantle patriarchal structures by challenging stereotypes and delivering powerful narratives through humor. Co-founders Jamie Rabinovitch and Natalya Nyn had been independently producing women-focused comedy shows in NYC since 2017 before joining forces. After meeting as co-workers at a local comedy club, they launched the festival to foster a greater sense of community, with their first event drawing over 200 submissions from female-identifying comedians. This "Knockouts Creators" showcase includes celebrated comedian and actress Janeane Garofalo. A prominent voice in alternative comedy since the 1990s, Garofalo is known for her work on "The Ben Stiller Show," "The Larry Sanders Show," and in films like "Reality Bites," often using her self-deprecating style to critique pop culture and the pressures on women. The Stand has been a fixture in the NYC comedy scene since its opening in 2012 and has been recognized as a top venue by both New York Magazine and Time Out New York. The festival's programming extends beyond stand-up to include industry panels and community-building opportunities. One such event is a panel discussion focused on the strategies behind creating a viral digital series, featuring insights from established writers and content creators. Knockouts is part of a larger movement in the city to diversify the comedy landscape. Other events this month include the Black Women in Comedy Laff Fest, founded by comedian Joanna M. Briley, and the New York Queer Comedy Festival, both providing crucial platforms in a field where female comedians still navigate significant challenges.
