Nigeria Eliminated From World Cup Contention

FIFA has confirmed that DR Congo will take the spot in the 2026 World Cup intercontinental playoffs, officially eliminating Nigeria from contention. The decision finalizes another slot as ticket sales for the tournament are now open.

Nigeria's hopes were dashed following a tense CAF play-off final against DR Congo in November 2025, which ended 1-1 before the Super Eagles were defeated in a penalty shootout. This loss relegated them to a position where their only path to the World Cup was outside of their own on-field performance. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) lodged a formal protest with FIFA, alleging that DR Congo had fielded ineligible players during the crucial match. The NFF's appeal centered on the claim that some of the Congolese players were dual-nationals, which they argued was not permissible under Congolese law, hoping for a ruling that would overturn the result. FIFA ultimately dismissed Nigeria's complaint, confirming that the Congolese Federation had followed all the correct administrative procedures for their players. The world governing body's decision was solidified when they released the official schedule for the inter-confederation play-off tournament with DR Congo listed as Africa's representative, making no mention of the Nigerian appeal. This marks the second consecutive World Cup for which the Super Eagles have failed to qualify, a significant blow for the three-time African champions. Their tumultuous qualifying campaign saw three different managers at the helm: José Peseiro, Finidi George, and Éric Chelle. DR Congo now advances to the six-team FIFA Play-Off Tournament, which will take place from March 26 to March 31, 2026, in Mexico. The Leopards, ranked as one of the top two teams, will bypass the semi-finals and play the winner of the match between New Caledonia and Jamaica for one of the final two spots in the World Cup.
