Lufthansa cabin‑crew strikes hit flights

A cabin crew strike at Lufthansa canceled about 935 flights — roughly 82% of the airline’s schedule — with industrial action continuing into Thursday alongside pilot walkouts. (The disruption has left large parts of the carrier’s network grounded and passengers facing mass rebooking.) (x.com)

Lufthansa’s latest cabin crew strike has grounded much of the airline’s German network on April 15 and 16, extending a week of disruption after a pilots’ walkout ended Tuesday. (lufthansa.com) The strike covers Lufthansa and Lufthansa CityLine flights on Wednesday, April 15, and Thursday, April 16, 2026. Lufthansa said cancellations were unavoidable and told passengers to check flight status before leaving for the airport. (lufthansa.com) The cabin crew union, known as UFO, called the action on Monday after a one-day walkout on April 10 and while a separate pilots’ strike was still underway. The pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit had ordered its members at Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cargo, Lufthansa CityLine and Eurowings to stop work from 12:01 a.m. Monday through 11:59 p.m. Tuesday. (yahoo.com) (dw.com) The dispute has spread across several work groups and several rounds of action in 2026. DPA reported Monday that the new cabin crew stoppage was the fifth wave of industrial action at the Lufthansa group this year. (yahoo.com) Frankfurt and Munich, Lufthansa’s two main hubs, have taken the biggest hit. During the April 10 cabin crew strike, Frankfurt Airport said about 580 flights were canceled there alone, and Deutsche Welle reported that nearly 75% of Lufthansa’s roughly 350 scheduled departures from Frankfurt were scrapped. (independent.co.uk) (dw.com) The unions and Lufthansa are fighting over different contracts, but the pilots’ dispute has centered on pay and pensions, including the pension scheme and pay at regional unit CityLine. Lufthansa called the pilots’ demands “absurd and unworkable,” while union president Andreas Pinheiro said the company had shown “no discernible willingness” to reach a solution. (yahoo.com) (dw.com) For passengers, the immediate issue is rebooking and refunds. Lufthansa said customers whose flights are canceled can rebook once free of charge or get a refund, and domestic German Lufthansa tickets can in some cases be exchanged for Deutsche Bahn rail tickets. (lufthansa.com) Lufthansa also says it usually rebooks affected travelers automatically if contact details are in the booking, though it warned of high call volumes and urged passengers to use its online tools. The airline said flights operated by Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Swiss, Air Dolomiti, Discover Airlines, Edelweiss and Lufthansa City Airlines are not affected by this cabin crew strike. (lufthansa.com 1) (lufthansa.com 2) European Union passenger-rights rules can also apply, but Lufthansa says strikes are among the “extraordinary circumstances” that can affect compensation claims. The airline says canceled or heavily delayed passengers are still entitled to care such as meals, and in some cases hotel accommodation and refunds. (lufthansa.com) The practical result is that Lufthansa travelers have faced back-to-back labor stoppages from Friday, April 10, through Thursday, April 16, with Frankfurt and Munich repeatedly disrupted. Unless Lufthansa and the unions reopen talks quickly, the airline’s recovery depends on how fast it can reposition crews, aircraft and passengers after the strikes end. (reuters.com) (lufthansa.com)
