App State Student Organizes Volunteer Program
Alli Ozboz, a junior at Appalachian State University, is organizing a volunteer-based program to provide fee-free English education in underserved communities internationally. The initiative is currently recruiting volunteers to participate in the program.
- The program is organized through the nonprofit Learning Enterprises and is directed by Alli Ozboz, who also serves as the organization's Campus Director at Appalachian State. - After a positive experience volunteering in Croatia in the summer of 2025, Ozboz took on the leadership role to re-establish the Romania program. - The seven-week program is scheduled to run from June 16th to August 3rd, 2026, and will place eight volunteers in rural communities within the Transylvania region of Romania. - There is no language requirement for volunteers, who will be teaching English to a wide range of students, from children aged 5 to 18 to adults. - Volunteers are expected to teach for a minimum of two hours per day, five days a week, and are encouraged to develop their own creative and interactive lesson plans. - While there is no program fee, participants are responsible for their own airfare, an application fee of $30-35, and a refundable $500 security deposit. - Accommodation and meals are provided by host families in the local communities, and volunteers will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture. - The application process for the program involves an online application and two rounds of interviews to determine suitability.
