Fremont AI Founder Now Youngest Self-Made Woman Billionaire

A 30-year-old AI entrepreneur from Fremont has become the world's youngest self-made woman billionaire, according to Forbes. Her rapid ascent, which unseats Taylor Swift from the top spot, highlights the massive wealth creation happening in the Bay Area's AI sector.

The entrepreneur, Lucy Guo, began her tech career early, learning to code in second grade and later dropping out of Carnegie Mellon University after receiving a Thiel Fellowship. Before co-founding Scale AI, she had already interned at Facebook and worked as the first female product designer at Snapchat. Guo co-founded Scale AI in 2016 with Alexandr Wang, whom she met while working at Quora. The company provides data labeling services crucial for training artificial intelligence systems, essentially acting as the "picks and shovels of the AI industry." Scale AI recently closed a fundraising round that pushed its valuation to $25 billion. Despite leaving Scale AI in 2018 after a reported disagreement with Wang, Guo retained an approximate 5% stake in the company. It is this equity that forms the majority of her estimated $1.3 billion net worth. Her co-founder, Alexandr Wang, who owns a 15% stake, has been the world's youngest self-made billionaire since 2022. Since her departure from Scale AI, Guo has launched a new venture called Passes, a platform designed to help creators monetize their content and engage with their audience. She has described building a consumer-facing platform like Passes as a tougher challenge than the business-to-business model of her first company.
