Vancouver Gallery Gets 800 Stephen Shore Photos

Vancouver Art Gallery received a gift of over 800 photographs by Stephen Shore, enriching its collection with iconic American imagery. The substantial donation significantly expands the gallery's contemporary photography holdings.

The generous gift comes from the Chan Family, prominent philanthropists in Vancouver's cultural sector. This donation now establishes the Vancouver Art Gallery as one of the world's most comprehensive homes for Stephen Shore's acclaimed "Uncommon Places" series. The more than 800 photographs are all from Shore's seminal "Uncommon Places" (1973–1981), a body of work that played a key role in establishing color photography as a legitimate fine art form. Shore's work from this period is known for finding beauty in ordinary American scenes, rendered with meticulous detail and vivid color. Stephen Shore's career began at a young age; the Museum of Modern Art acquired three of his photos when he was just 14. Before his road-trip series, he was a regular at Andy Warhol's Factory from 1965 to 1967, documenting the scene and its iconic figures. At 23, he became the second living photographer to have a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This donation marks the largest gift of U.S. photography to the gallery since it received 556 photographs by Harry Callahan in 2014. The addition of Shore's work significantly strengthens the gallery's international photo-based collections. A selection of the donated works will be displayed in a new exhibition titled "Stephen Shore: Uncommon Places," opening on March 27, 2026. The show will feature over 50 photographs from the Chan Family's gift, including several that have never been publicly exhibited. The upcoming exhibition will offer a fresh perspective by foregrounding Shore's photographs taken in Canada during his travels. It will also highlight his encounters with the people who shaped his journeys.
