Marathon adds low‑stakes mode

Bungie is rolling out a “free kit frenzy” mode for Marathon this week that gives players a zero‑to‑hero entry path without risking expensive loadouts. PC Gamer reports the mode is an experiment to see whether a permanent lower‑stakes option should exist alongside the core extraction gameplay (pcgamer.com).

Bungie is adding a lower-risk Marathon playlist on April 15 that forces every player to start with the same free gear. (ign.com) The mode is called Dire Marsh Sponsored, and it goes live Wednesday, April 15, at 10 a.m. Pacific time as a limited-time experiment. Bungie said the test is scheduled to run through April 29, though it could end earlier or run longer. (tech.yahoo.com) In Marathon, players usually bring weapons and equipment into a run and lose that kit if they die before extracting. In Dire Marsh Sponsored, every player enters with a white-tier free sponsored kit and has to upgrade by looting the map. (marathonthegame.com) (ign.com) The test is limited to the Dire Marsh zone, and Bungie is using it to study what it calls the game’s “early gear ecosystem.” Game director Joe Ziegler said the team wants to see how “zero to hero” runs play when everyone starts from the same low baseline. (tech.yahoo.com) (ign.com) That is a notable shift for a game built around extraction rules, where the core tension comes from risking valuable equipment for a better payout. Marathon’s official site describes the loop as scavenging Tau Ceti IV, extracting with loot, and then putting that gear “back on the line” in the next run. (marathonthegame.com) Bungie has been testing these side playlists as temporary experiments rather than permanent modes. IGN reported that Bungie recently tested duos in the same way, and Ziegler said the studio is now working to make duos a full feature in Season 2. (ign.com) Marathon launched on March 5, 2026, on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and Bungie said its seasons last about three months. That gives the studio a short window to adjust how punishing the early game feels before Season 2 arrives. (bungie.net 1) (bungie.net 2) The experiment does not remove player-versus-player combat or the extraction format. It narrows the gear gap at the start, so the question Bungie is really testing is whether equal entry gear changes who feels comfortable queuing up. (ign.com) (marathonthegame.com) For now, Bungie is treating Dire Marsh Sponsored as a two-week test, not a permanent safety valve. If the queue produces healthier matches or better retention, it could become the template for a standing low-stakes lane beside Marathon’s higher-risk playlists. (ign.com) (tech.yahoo.com)
