Hanami getting pricier

Japan’s hanami picnic costs have jumped about 25% since 2020, squeezing the classic cherry‑blossom picnic experience for visitors and locals alike (reuters.com). Blossoms are peaking now in Tokyo with forecasts pointing to late March–early April — plan early and expect some price pressure on picnics and supplies (tokyocheapo.com) (hollywoodreporter.com).

Dai-ichi Life Research’s chief economist Hideo Kumano updated a “hanami cost” index that tracks a weighted basket of 14 picnic staples such as rice balls, bento boxes, fried chicken, chips and beer, and reported a 4.2% year‑on‑year rise in February. (money.usnews.com) The biggest jumps inside that 14‑item basket were steep: steamed sweet buns and carbonated drinks rose about 46% each since 2020, while rice balls climbed roughly 45%, driven in part by higher ingredient and plastic‑container costs. (themalaysianreserve.com) A separate consumer survey by market researcher Intage found the average planned hanami budget this year is ¥6,383, down 13.8% from 2025, signaling households are trimming spending on travel and eating out for blossom viewing. (japannews.yomiuri.co.jp) Despite shoppers cutting back, Kansai University emeritus professor Katsuhiro Miyamoto estimates the overall hanami season could still generate about ¥1.49 trillion in economic activity in 2026, with foreign visitors making up more than 30% of that spending. (bloomberg.com) Meteorological and crowd forecasts place Tokyo’s peak bloom in the narrow late‑March window — authorities and travel trackers flagged March 26–April 1 as the key full‑bloom period with many models singling out March 30 as a likely peak for the city. (tokyocheapo.com) Some local governments have already adjusted events and cancelled large hanami festivals this season to manage overtourism and resident complaints, with officials citing threats to residents’ daily lives as the reason for cancellations.
